QUEENSLAND URGED TO FOLLOW VICTORIAN LEAD AND BUILD INDUSTRY SKILLS

Legacy Way Tunnel

QMCA has today called on Queensland Government to follow the lead of Victoria and look at innovative ways to ensure that the state has the talent we need to deliver major infrastructure projects.

QMCA CEO, Jon Davies, welcomed the Victorian Government’s Victorian Major Projects Leadership Academy and believes that discussions should be held between industry and government to determine a similar approach in Queensland. “There is no doubt that the infrastructure pipeline in Victoria is the envy of the nation, and it is a very smart move by the Andrews Government to ensure that public sector project delivery skills will be of the highest possible standards.”

“By their nature, major projects are extremely complex and come with processes, contractual agreements and industry specific machinations that require unique skillsets that are ever changing and evolving. By partnering with world class institutions to create a training program for the Victorian Government, we believe that there will be significant benefits to project delivery in Victoria including improved procurement, project management and contractual delivery. This will mean that in the long run Victorian’s will save time and money across major project delivery.”

“With Victorian government infrastructure investment reaching $13.7 billion in 2018-19, with a total of $78.9 billion in state capital projects commencing or underway, QMCA believes the Academy will ensure a level of protection and success for the pipelines projects.”

“In Queensland where financial constraints are tighter, an approach like we will see in Victoria can make the state government’s committed budget funding more efficient and increase the value of return on investment to Queenslanders.”

“In Queensland, QMCA has been part of the Constructionarium initiative which aims to helps to develop practically minded engineers, by providing a safe environment for new engineers to develop team working skills, problem solving capabilities and hands on experience. As an association we know that to be competitive Queensland must develop and have access to the best available talent armed with the skills industry needs and we urge Queensland Government to follow the lead of their Victorian counterparts.”
