The Queensland Major Contractors Association (QMCA) expresses profound concern over the revelations detailed in the independent report by Geoffrey Watson SC, commissioned by CFMEU administrator Mark Irving KC, which uncovers a disturbing pattern of systemic violence, intimidation, and misogyny within the Queensland and Northern Territory branch of the CFMEU.
The report’s findings, including documented instances of threats, harassment, and abusive behaviour towards women and children, employers, inspectors, politicians and rival unions. These findings are deeply troubling and stand in stark contrast to the values of safety, respect, and professionalism that underpin Queensland’s construction industry.
QMCA unequivocally condemns the actions and culture described in the report and we commend the administrator for initiating this report to shine a light on the appalling behaviour that the QMCA and others in the industry have been raising for some time; and to stamp it out. Such behaviour not only undermines the integrity of the construction sector but also poses significant risks to the safety and well-being of all industry participants.
We commend the courage of those who came forward to share their experiences and the efforts of the independent administrator in initiating reforms aimed at dismantling this toxic culture.
QMCA calls upon all stakeholders, including government bodies, industry partners, and CFMEU members, to support these reforms and to work collaboratively to ensure a safe, respectful, and lawful working environment for all.
With a record pipeline of work in front of the construction industry in Queensland, we need to attract many more people to the industry. The behaviours exhibited and undertaken by the CFMEU, as outlined in the report, do not facilitate this. We thank the CFMEU administrator, Mark Irving, for his commitment to immediately reforming the CFMEU so that these practices never return and are not part of the industry going forward. It’s essential that all parties work collaboratively to ensure that the industry is a safe, rewarding and attractive place to work.
QMCA remains committed to advocating for the highest standards of conduct within the construction industry and will continue to support initiatives that promote transparency, accountability, and the well-being of our workforce.
