EJ Sustainability and Community Award

Here are your finalists for the EJ Sustainability and Community Award

Inland Rail

New South Wales and Queensland Border to Gowrie

Inland Rail is building a 1600km freight rail line connecting Melbourne and Brisbane, which will transform how freight is moved across Australia.

To support notification of the revised draft Environmental Impact Statement for the NSW and Queensland Border to Gowrie section of the project, the organisation undertook a range of events and activities. These were designed to be inclusive and responsive, ensuring the community could easily navigate and understand technical information and provide feedback.

Events included community meetings and information sessions, one-on-one meetings with affected landowners, and targeted briefings with local government, state departments and agencies, and local businesses.

A 3D flythrough visualisation to show the rail line was viewed nearly 20,000 times during the consultation period and has been the most-watched fly-through video across Inland Rail, helping the community visualise the proposed route.

Consultation resulted in an impressive 13,694 project website views, 212 event interactions and 1058 views of the online Summary of Findings document.

John Holland

Cairns Water Security Stage 1 Project

John Holland embedded community impact and sustainability into the Cairns Water Security Stage 1 Project, strengthening the region socially, culturally, and environmentally.

The infrastructure project is the largest in the region’s history, moving through residential streets, school zones, cane farms, and culturally significant areas. Despite the vast size of the project, personal interaction was prioritised to build trust and ensure people felt heard.

The project introduced an industry‑leading model of community‑first construction for regional Queensland. Its innovation lay not in technology, but in returning to fundamentals that included personal connection, cultural respect, and early listening.

The initiative achieved a 76.4 per cent community Key Result Area score and positive sentiment across all demographics, while increasing understanding of construction, water security, and environmental protection.

The model is now being shared with industry groups, and regional partners, and is transferable to other Queensland projects

SMA Infrastructure (SGQ, McIlwain, ALBEM Operations)

Pacific Motorway M1 Burleigh to Palm Beach (Nineteenth Avenue) Project Package B – Pacific Motorway M1 Varsity Lakes to Tugun Upgrade)

During the Pacific Motorway M1 Burleigh to Palm Beach Project, SMA Infrastructure delivered a targeted wildlife sustainability and ecological connectivity initiative within a highly constrained coastal motorway corridor.

A dedicated fauna underpass reconnects the historically fragmented Burleigh to Springbrook biodiversity corridor, providing permanent connectivity to improve species repopulation after the devastating 2019 bushfires, working alongside an industry-first sustainability initiative to protect and re-establish invertebrates in the area.

Supporting this, a suite of koala-specific measures were implemented, including koala-proof noise barriers to prevent koalas climbing structural supports, and biodegradable koala escape ropes at constrained locations where temporary fencing could not be installed.

The initiative contributed to achieving an Infrastructure Sustainability Council of Australia “Leading” rating, while building practical capability across the project team. By shifting wildlife sustainability from mitigation to permanent outcomes, the project offers a practical model for industry-wide uplift in biodiversity-focused infrastructure delivery.

Fulton Hogan Hull McIlwain Joint Venture

Putting purpose behind every action

The Fulton Hogan Hull McIlwain Joint Venture is delivering the Coomera Connector Stage 1 Central Project, an 8-kilometre, six-lane motorway forming part of South East Queensland’s largest road infrastructure program. Following 12 months of construction, the project achieved measurable, scalable and transferable social and environmental outcomes.

Initiatives include delivering STEM workshops in local schools, embarking on social enterprise partnerships, and implementing industry-leading environmental practices.

Waste was transformed into energy by diverting 12,000 tonnes of site-won mulch from landfill to renewable energy generation. Queensland’s first biodegradable fauna habitat pods were also deployed, to support biodiversity and ecosystem health.

A partnership with Mates in Construction raised awareness on mental health and wellbeing, and drove fundraising activities to raise $50,000, delivering a meaningful impact.

The project team embedded a commitment to sustainability and engagement in every decision, delivering value for community and industry and creating a blueprint for others to follow

Urban Utilities and SRG Global Utilities

Esk Reservoir

Urban Utilities, in partnership with SRG Global Utilities, delivered the Esk Reservoir project in December 2025, supporting community, cultural and environmental initiatives.

At the project launch, a Welcome to Country, guided bush walk, and smoking ceremony fostered respect for First Nations’ heritage and the Traditional Owner’s connection to Country.

Urban Utilities and SRG Global Utilities prioritised sustainability by minimising waste and donating Eucalypt branches to wildlife rescue, effectively repurposing cleared vegetation. Koala crossings installed along the Esk Reservoir fence supported the protection of local fauna and helped maintain ecological connectivity.

In recognition of their commitment to sustainability, the team received Urban Utilities’ Crew of the Quarter – Environmental Leadership Award. Their actions reflect leading practice in socially responsible infrastructure delivery and are highly scalable and transferable across a diverse range of projects within the industry.
