For Joel Martin, Director of 4020 Consult, supporting the QMCA Innovation and Excellence Awards is about celebrating the best of the construction and infrastructure sector while investing in the industry’s future.
As sponsor of the 4020 Consult Emerging Professional of the Year Award, 4020 Consult has played a role in recognising the next generation of leaders who will shape Queensland’s infrastructure landscape in the years ahead.
For Martin, the awards stand out for the breadth of talent and achievement they showcase across the industry.
“One of the things I really like about the QMCA awards is the variety,” he says. “Some awards programs can feel very similar across categories, but the QMCA awards genuinely highlight a diverse range of people and projects across the sector.”
“It’s a great day for the industry. It celebrates what we do well, but it also gives us an opportunity to reflect on how we can continue to improve.”
Celebrating emerging talent
The Emerging Professional of the Year category holds particular significance for 4020 Consult.
“These are people with around three to seven years of experience in the industry,” Martin says. “They are the future. Supporting them is, in a way, our legacy.”
Through the judging process, Martin has seen first-hand the talent and potential of young professionals entering the sector.
“What stood out this year was not just their intelligence or technical capability, but their attitude,” he says.
“They demonstrated resilience, curiosity and a genuine commitment to getting things done. They are problem solvers, and that’s really at the heart of what our industry is about.”
Martin was also struck by how relatable many of the candidates were.
“They were normal people from different walks of life who had a great attitude and a strong work ethic,” he says.
“You don’t have to be the smartest person in the room or some kind of technical genius to have a fantastic career in this industry. It’s about applying your skills, working with others and solving problems.”
Inspiring the next generation
Martin believes programs like the QMCA awards play an important role in attracting new talent into construction and infrastructure.
“In a lot of ways, it’s like sport. If you can’t see it, you can’t be it,” he says.
“When people see others achieving great things in the industry, it can inspire them to think that they could do the same.”
Sharing the stories behind award winners is particularly powerful.
“Massive projects are impressive, but what people often connect with are the individual stories. The person behind the achievement,” Martin says.
“That’s why highlighting emerging professionals is so important. They become role models for the next generation.”
Martin is deeply involved in initiatives aimed at encouraging young people to consider careers in the industry, including volunteering with programs that introduce students to construction and engineering.
Encouragingly, several recent nominees for the Emerging Professional award had previously participated in these programs.
“It shows the impact these initiatives can have,” he says. “When young professionals come back and help inspire the next group, it creates a really positive cycle.”
A changing and evolving industry
Martin has also seen the industry evolve significantly in recent years, particularly in the diversity of people entering the profession.
“The range of backgrounds and perspectives we’re seeing now is fantastic,” he says. “We’re also seeing more flexible approaches to work and a greater focus on supporting people throughout their careers.”
These changes will be increasingly important as Queensland prepares to deliver a substantial pipeline of infrastructure projects over the next decade.
“We’re heading into a period where we’re going to need a lot more people across the industry,” Martin says.
“Programs like the QMCA awards help highlight the incredible opportunities that exist in construction and infrastructure.”
Opportunity for the next decade
For Martin, the next phase of infrastructure development across Queensland is an exciting one.
“The projects themselves are amazing,” he says. “But what really excites me is the opportunity they create for people.”
Queensland’s infrastructure pipeline will deliver major transport and community projects across the state, particularly in rapidly growing regions such as the Sunshine Coast and Moreton Bay.
“These projects are going to shape communities and improve how people live and work,” Martin says.
“They also give people the chance to build careers on meaningful projects right here in Queensland, rather than having to travel interstate or overseas.”
At the same time, the industry is beginning to embrace new approaches to workforce management, including greater flexibility and improved work-life balance.
“There are conversations happening now about things like flexible rosters and even nine-day fortnights on major projects,” Martin says.
“Those sorts of initiatives would have been almost unheard of a few years ago. They show how the industry is evolving.”
Raising standards and building the future
Ultimately, Martin believes the QMCA Innovation and Excellence Awards play a vital role in recognising the people and projects that are raising the bar across the sector.
“They shine a light on what excellence looks like,” he says.
“That recognition is important, not just for the individuals and organisations involved, but for the entire industry.”
By highlighting innovation, leadership and achievement, the awards help drive continuous improvement and inspire others to follow in the footsteps of those being recognised.
For Martin and 4020 Consult, supporting the 4020 Consult Emerging Professional of the Year Award is about ensuring the industry continues to grow stronger.
“These young professionals are going to be the leaders of our industry in the future,” he says.
“Seeing their passion, their capability and their commitment gives you a lot of confidence about where the construction and infrastructure sector is heading.”
