Here are your fionalists for the Coates Project of the Year Under $100M Award

SEE Civil

Loganlea Road Upgrade

SEE Civil delivered the $51.9 million Loganlea Road Upgrade, transforming the 2.3-kilometre corridor for Logan City Council.

The project widened Loganlea Road from four to six lanes, upgraded three major intersections, widened and strengthened the Ray Hodgson Bridge, relocated extensive underground and overhead services, and delivered new active transport infrastructure. Supporting more than 42,000 vehicles per day, the project addressed critical congestion, safety and capacity constraints.

SEE Civil introduced an innovative traffic management model that reduced unnecessary construction by approximately 58% and saved $360,000. The reuse of site-won material delivered a further $350,000 in savings while reducing environmental impacts.

Despite the complex staging, tight work zones and critical utility relocations, the team completed construction two months ahead of schedule with zero reportable safety incidents.

The legacy of the Loganlea Road Upgrade extends beyond the asset itself, with safer, more resilient infrastructure for the community, regulator-endorsed models for live-traffic safety and bridge strengthening, and a skilled workforce contributing to the future of Queensland’s civil construction industry.

BMD

Clarke Creek Wind Farm Stage 1

Stage 1 of Squadron Energy’s Clarke Creek Wind Farm saw BMD deliver the Civil Balance of Plant works for the northern section of the 450-megawatt project in Central Queensland.

Delivered in one of Australia’s most challenging wind farm environments, the project can generate enough electricity to power approximately 330,000 homes in Queensland and mitigate 738,000 tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

The site was defined by steep ridgelines, deep valleys and variable ground conditions. BMD sequenced critical activities and tailored construction programming to ensure the safe and efficient project delivery of 23 wind turbine foundations, hardstands and associated works.

BMD prioritised safe, efficient and environmentally responsible outcomes throughout the project. Equipment motion studies to redesign earthworks and optimise haul routes were used to improve safety, reduce rehandling and lower fuel use. The team also repurposed excavated rock, removing the need for imported quarry materials.

The project created 300 local jobs and exceeded Indigenous procurement targets, while supporting Queensland’s renewable energy ambitions.

BMD’s proactive approach to sequencing provided strong schedule certainty, with works completed in seven months.

Fulton Hogan

National Airfield Maintenance Works – Royal Australian Air Force Base Amberley

Fulton Hogan delivered major maintenance works at the Royal Australian Air Force Base in Amberley, the Air Force’s largest base and a critical Defence operations hub. The project resurfaced 90,000 tonnes of asphalt, improved airfield drainage, and installed Australia’s first infrared runway lighting system to support tactical aircraft training.

The project faced challenges including nightly runway access constraints, and strict operational requirements to maintain Defence readiness. When Defence operations precluded standard runway closures, Fulton Hogan introduced the “Super Weekend” model, achieving major productivity gains, including placing around 2,000 tonnes of asphalt in a single shift and 7,000 tonnes over a weekend.

Coal tar, a carcinogenic material, was unexpectedly identified early in profiling. With no clear management guidelines available from Queensland regulators for coal tar, specialists were engaged and a bespoke management plan was created. By adopting multi‑state controls that substantially exceeded minimum requirements, the team reduced health risks and eliminated disposal impacts.

Strategic program planning enabled completion three months early and delivery within the approved budget. Legacy tools, including coal tar management protocols and the Super Weekend methodology are now adopted across the business, strengthening industry capability.
