2020 Innovation & Excellence Awards

The annual QMCA awards are back to celebrate the outstanding work that our members, partners and suppliers undertake in Queensland.

Our Award Event will welcome over 500 leaders from the contracting, engineering, consulting, government and industry environments.

This year we’ll continue to showcase the brightest and best that our industry has to offer.

Submissions are now open for the 2020 Queensland Major Contractors Association (QMCA) Innovation and Excellence Awards to celebrate the outstanding work of our industry leaders.

Award Categories

The award categories for 2020 have been expanded to include seven categories, including:

  • Cbus Super Fund Project of the Year above $100 million Award (QMCA Members Only)
  • Coates Hire Project of the Year below $100 million Award
  • Design and Innovation Award
  • Project Manager or Construction Professional Award (QMCA Members Only)
  • Sustainability Award 
  • Ian Harrington Award (QMCA Members Only)
  • Young/Emerging Professional of the Year (QMCA Members Only)

Contractors, design consultants, subcontractors and suppliers are invited to submit their entries in their chosen category.

Award Submissions

This year the award submissions comprise two elements:

  • Part 1 – Online Submission of no more than 500 words using the form below.Your award submission should represent achievements that showcase innovation and excellence in the Queensland civil infrastructure sector. CLICK HERE FOR AWARD CRITERIA
  • Part 2 – 30 minute panel interview and Q&A with the judges for your nominated category. This will be a 15 minute presentation to the judging panel followed by a 15 minute Q&A.
    • Interview and Presentation will be scheduled for the second week of February 2021.

Register your award submission entry by Friday 29 January 2021. Presentations do not require submitting at this time and can be provided at the session with the judges in February.

    Inland Rail

    Inland Rail is a fast freight backbone that will transform how goods are moved around Australia, generating opportunities for our regions and our economy, now and well into the future.

    Spanning more than 1,700km and comprising 13 individual projects, Inland Rail is the missing link in our national freight network, providing transit times of less than 24 hours for freight trains between Melbourne and Brisbane via regional Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria.

    During construction it will create more than 21,500 jobs, including more than 11,800 in Queensland. Work on Inland Rail is well underway, with the Parkes to Narromine section in NSW commissioned in September 2020.

    The Australian Government has committed funding for the Australian Rail Track Corporation (ARTC) to build Inland Rail, in partnership with the private sector.

    Eligibility Criteria

    Project of Year >$100m

    To be eligible for the QMCA Project of the Year > $100m Award, entrants/entries must adhere to the following criteria:

    • Entrants must be a current QMCA member.
    • The idea/concept must have been applied/constructed/executed in the last two years.
    • Entrants must be based or have an office in Queensland.
    • The project in which the innovation has been conducted must be located in Queensland.
    • The submitted idea/concept must demonstrate innovation in excellence within the civil infrastructure sector. Please note this includes industrial and resource projects but excludes residential or commercial building projects.
    • By submitting an entry, copyright for use of all entry materials is assigned to the QMCA.

    If your application does not fit the above criteria, it may be eligible for another QMCA Award.

    Ian Harrington Award

    To be eligible for the QMCA Ian Harrington Award, entrants/entries must adhere to the following criteria:

    • The collaboration must have been conducted between a team or individual employed by a QMCA member company and one or more of the following:
      • A client organisation,
      • A design consultant, subcontractor or supplier,
      • An industry group(s) and/or researcher institution.
    • The collaboration must have been conducted in the last two years.
    • Entrants must be based or have an office in Queensland.
    • The benefits of the collaboration must have been realised within the civil infrastructure sector in Queensland. Please note this includes industrial and resource projects but excludes residential or commercial building projects.
    • By submitting an entry, copyright for use of all entry materials is assigned to the QMCA. Information provided by entrants can be held in confidence at the applicants’ request. Please put this request in writing.

    Project Manager/Professional of Year and Emerging Professional of Year

    To be eligible for the QMCA Project Manager/Professional of Year and the QMCA Emerging Professional of Year, entrants/entries must adhere to the following criteria:

    • Entrants must be based in Queensland.
    • Entrants must be employed by a QMCA Executive General, Ordinary General or Associate Member
    • By submitting an entry, copyright for use of all entry materials is assigned to the QMCA.

    Other Awards

    Design and Innovation

    To be eligible for the QMCA Design and Innovation Award, entrants/entries must adhere to the following criteria:

    • The idea/concept must have been applied/constructed/executed in the last two years.
    • Entrants must be based or have an office in Queensland.
    • The project in which the innovation has been conducted must be located in Queensland.
    • The submitted idea/concept must demonstrate innovation in excellence within the civil infrastructure sector. Please note this includes industrial and resource projects but excludes residential or commercial building projects.
    • By submitting an entry, copyright for use of all entry materials is assigned to the QMCA.

    For this category entrants/entries are not required to be:

    • A QMCA member.
    • Ideas/concepts do not have to have been realised on a QMCA member project.

    Project of the Year <$100m

    To be eligible for the QMCA Project of the Year > $100m Award, entrants/entries must adhere to the following criteria:

    • The idea/concept must have been applied/constructed/executed in the last two years.
    • Entrants must be based or have an office in Queensland.
    • The project in which the innovation has been conducted must be located in Queensland.

    • The project in which the innovation has been conducted must be located in Queensland.
    • The submitted idea/concept must demonstrate innovation in excellence within the civil infrastructure sector. Please note this includes industrial and resource projects but excludes residential or commercial building projects.
    • By submitting an entry, copyright for use of all entry materials is assigned to the QMCA.

    For this category entrants/entries are not required to be:
