Energy Fleet by Hembrows Design Excellence Award

This award showcases the very best of design in construction and infrastructure and is intended to showcase the creativity, innovation and thinking utilised to support major infrastructure projects.

Foleyvale Crossing

Red Fox Advisory rose to the challenge of successfully constructing the Foleyvale Crossing, an upgraded crossing over the Mackenzie River, 135 kilometres west of Rockhampton.

Jointly funded by Sunwater and the Department of Transport and Main Roads, it is part of the enabling works associated with the Rookwood Weir project, a significant investment in Central Queensland providing water resilience to urban communities and supporting regional farming.

The new crossing includes a 90-metre bridge, 40,000 m3 of earthworks, concrete pavements, unbound pavements, and extensive rock protection and landscaping treatments.

Managing both design and contract administration, the team developed innovative design strategies to ensure successful project delivery in a remote location, within a tight budget and timeframe.

Strategies included using small-diameter piles to address concrete supply issues, removing the bridge rail to reduce long-term maintenance, constructing a large diversion drain to minimise the need for a new secondary bridge, stabilising subgrades in situ to reduce remove and replace operations, employing a lightweight plank design to reduce crane loads, and effectively reusing excavated material for the benefit of the surrounding community.

Rockhampton Airport (ROK) Maintenance Precinct

The Rockhampton Airport Maintenance Precinct (RAMP) is a dedicated aircraft maintenance facility that provides essential services to the regional aviation sector and forms a core component of Rockhampton Regional Council’s Airport Masterplans.

RAMP was delivered in collaboration with Rockhampton Airport, Alliance Airlines, GHD, GHD Design, BMD, and AHRENS, with GHD undertaking the full design scope of works for all airside and landside infrastructure.

The GHD team – located in offices from Cairns to the Gold Coast – showcased an innovative approach to building within flood-prone, low-lying area on difficult ground conditions.

Their design-for-place approach delivered significant innovations, including designing pavement and drainage solutions that were appropriate for difficult ground conditions. The use of 3D modelling to optimise the earthworks and drainage design, maximised the cut and fill opportunities while minimising the need for imported fill material, therefore reducing the airfield impact on the surrounding environment.

RAMP has delivered significant cost savings by relocating maintenance activities from Europe to Rockhampton and generating 225 jobs in the process. The project serves as a blueprint for others to navigate local challenges and opportunities, while contributing to regional growth and diversification, and enhancing aircraft maintenance capacity and capability.
